An organization based in Nairobi, Kenya is seeking a creative and imaginative illustrator to produce captivating illustrations for children’s books. The job combines artistic creativity with a deep understanding of storytelling, child development, and the digital medium. The ideal candidate will have a passion for visual storytelling, a strong understanding of child-friendly themes, and experience working in hard copy and digital formats. You will collaborate closely with authors, editors, and designers to create artwork that complements the narrative and engages young readers in hard copy and various digital platforms (eBooks, apps, websites).

Responsibilities
− Design and produce engaging illustrations that align with the tone, style, and age group of the children’s book.
− Work closely with the book’s author, editor, and creative team to interpret and visualize the story’s characters, setting, and mood.
− Ensure illustrations are optimized for digital formats, including web-based applications, eReaders, and other online platforms. Incorporate features like interactive elements where required.
− Create character designs that are relatable, age-appropriate, and visually distinct.
− Ensure consistency in style, character proportions, and color palette across all illustrations within a book.
− Modify illustrations based on editorial feedback and input from the creative team, while maintaining artistic quality and vision.
− Manage time efficiently to deliver illustrations within agreed-upon timelines, especially for serial or multi-chapter projects.
− Ensure content, themes, and art style are suitable for the intended age group (e.g., preschool, early readers, middle grade).
− Enhance the narrative with illustrations that add emotional depth, clarity, and entertainment value to the text.
− Create original work or modify existing assets within copyright regulations when necessary.
Eligibility
− Portfolio demonstrating strong experience in children’s book illustration both in hard copy and in digital formats (eBooks, apps).
− Proficiency in drawing and digital software such as Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, Procreate, or other illustration tools.
− Ability to use color and layout to enhance storytelling and appeal to young audiences.
− Ability to work in various art styles, from whimsical and playful to more realistic, depending on the story’s needs.
− Familiarity with resolution requirements for publications for both hard copy and digital formats, ability to create interactive elements if required (e.g., clickable, animated illustrations).
− Ability to efectively communicate and collaborate with the creative team, including authors, editors, and art directors.
− Understand visual elements that appeal to specific age groups and levels of literacy.
− Careful attention to fine details to ensure illustrations are accurate and consistent.
Preferred Qualifications
− Basic animation or motion graphics skills for interactive books, eBooks or apps.
− Familiarity with book publishing including digital platforms like Amazon Kindle, Apple Books, or custom children’s books, eBook and apps.
− Experience illustrating content aimed at children, especially within an educational or entertainment context.
